Since buying my first house, Orlando home remodeling has become a lifestyle. From searching through hundreds of home ideas on Pinterest to rewatching Fixer Upper episodes, I seek for inspiration daily. Designing each room is an art, and your art should capture who you are.

The living room is the center of family gatherings, celebrations, holidays, and friendly get-togethers. Along with your couch, coffee table, and television, there is more to the living room that could make yours cozy and welcoming.

Here are five pieces you need in your living room:

1. Throw Pillows

Pillows are one of my favorite pieces in my living room, family room, and bedroom. Pillows speak volumes when mixing and matching them on all types of furniture, so it is important to know how to pick the right pillows.

For instance, I have a black couch in my family room, and I was originally aiming for a black and red color scheme. I started adding blue to the mix, but plain blue and red pillows made the aesthetic look dark and uninviting. I purchased white pillow covers with gold and black patterns, and it instantly changed the vibe of my couch.

2. Plants

If you are looking to make your living room appear polished and peaceful, plants are your go-to to achieve this goal. Plants help you overcome stress, calm your heart rate, and lower your blood pressure. They also reduce noise pollution, and purifies the air.

Visit your local plant nursery or home improvement store, and feel the difference your body experiences when you explore plants for your living room.

3. Rug

Besides a couch, a rug is an important statement piece. The size and color of the rug can make or break the size of your living room. In order to amplify your space, make sure your rug is large enough to cover your couch, coffee table, and side tables. I often see rugs getting tucked under the couch, or the rug is so small it fits perfectly under the coffee table. However, a large rug brings all of your furniture together. I recommend a light-colored rug for both dark and light furniture.

4. Coffee Table Tray

Rather than leaving your coffee table bare or your magazines scattered, a coffee table tray allows you to add some accessories to your living room while keeping your table organized. I previously had a red tray that matched my red pillows, but switching to a wood tray brightened my black coffee table. It also ties in with the modern-rustic style I am pursuing in my home.

5. Wall Art

Wall art provides a color palette and a focal point to your living room. When guests walk into a room, their eyes will shift to photographs and art you have placed on your wall. Therefore, it is crucial you select art that meets the dimensions of your wall, and two to three shades that matches the rest of your home. If you are still deciding on a paint color for your living room, use wall art first to determine your eventual color palette.
